Redefining reality – a journey of trust and sharing

This post has been very difficult to edit.  There are a couple reasons for this.  My lack of voice has complicated my final editing which would have included a voiceover or some connecting shots to bring out my ideas.  In addition, so many things have happened this week that it’s been nearly impossible to capture it all on film.

Some quick recaps:

  • I had the chance to watch Micheal Apple speak on Critical Pedagogy at the University of Regina.  A renowned scholar dealing with my deep belief in the need for a liberating education, Apple reminded me of my respect for the work of Paulo Freire.  It was also really cool when I realized that I had used Apple’s work in defense of Freire in a course last year!
  • Response to last week’s video made me think that it may be time to be up-front about my own educational philosophy.  (Interesting enough, others felt the need to put that out there!)  In addition to Freire’s work, I have great respect for George Siemens and Stephen Downes’ theory of connectivism.
  • The footage from my cross-country trip lent itself to a bit of digital scrapbooking.  I had a lot of fun on the way!
  • Great conversations with fellow masters and PhD students alongside global response to exploitative systems pushed me to question the ways we are all succeptible to prescribed realities.
  • Constant and consistent questions about my safety and sanity reinforced the entire circle.  To those who asked if I was afraid, I replied: “I tend to believe that the majority of people are good.  Besides, if the bad guys are going to get me, they can get me anywhere!  On the street, in my home, or anywhere else.  If we continue to live in fear, think of all the great things we miss out on!”

  1. Leslie!
I love the way you have woven the theory and your reflection into your experience. Comparing sharing online, face to face and the terror and inhibitions people hold as preconceived notions about ‘safety’ and comfort levels.
    This is excellent.
Oh, and you are totally RAD! I had no idea you were ride sharing and couch surfing. I had a spot for you in both my home and my car. Too bad that didn’t align. Next time for sure. We will meet up for certain. Hopefully sooner than later and definitely on the radio.
    Namaste!

  2. Do I think you’re crazy?

Well, yes – crazy for life! Ain’t that a good thing? I see you out there, giving so much of yourself and (I believe) reaping so much as well. Reach out and most people reach back at you.

It’s funny you were talking about boundaries – this is a post I’ve been working on for weeks now; just can’t really get my thoughts into words (I struggle with articulation). The post is notionally entitled “What box?”

Your thoughts run deep and I love your thoughts. And if you ever make it down under, you have a welcome space at my home. I’d say you have a bed to sleep on but quite likely I’ll keep you up and talk till we’re hoarse. AND YES, bring the uke!!!!! Because if talking doesn’t make us hoarse, singing will.

    *virtual hugs* (catch).

    cheers,
    Malyn

Wow! Thanks for the props, ladies!

This notion of boundaries and professionalism is smack dab in the middle of my mind this week as well. After the last ECI831 class, I’m really considering what that means, and with George Siemens in class next week (OH YEAH!!!) it becomes an interesting thought process on connections and the power relationships that are built into our presentations of self.

I hope to take you both up on your offers of places to stay! Still in my plans for a visit to Giuila’s house, and Malyn, I’m the only one of my siblings who has not been down under! Will remedy that in my lifetime, with any luck. Anyone have a rideshare to australia??? Can one hitchhike on the tarmac?

  4. OK. Finally just got to this post. I was wondering where your reflections were!

I do think you are crazy and probably one of the bravest people I know- or know via this class and twitter! I am not prepared to shift my paradigm when it comes to hitchhicking! I would pick you up because I would be scared for you!

I love the way you post and blog via video. It’s on my list of things to learn to do.

Hey! Yeah, mine got lost in the aggregated list… oh well!

It’s funny… there are a lot of people who pick me up because they are afraid for me. I think it just shows the number of people who are good folks far outnumber the not so great folks.

When you get your video going, I’d love to check it out! Take the plunge!!!

  5. I don’t know how I missed this post, especially when you gave me a shout out haha! You DID get in my brain! It was so neat to watch your hitch-hiking process and listen to your thoughts while you were crossing the country. I wholeheartedly agree with Sarah when she says that you’re the bravest person I know!

PS – Love the happy egg menu!
